Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Exoplanetary Science

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral position to collaborate with Professor John M. Brewer and his Exoplanet Research Group in the Physics & Astronomy department at San Francisco State University.

Prof. Brewer is the Science Lead for the EXPRES 100 Earths Survey, looking for low-mass planets on long-period orbits around nearby stars. The position will focus on identifying stellar contributions to Doppler measurements in order to improve detection of small planets. Applicants with experience in machine learning, extreme precision radial velocities, and stellar noise are especially invited to apply.

Brewer's group has access to the four years of existing EXPRES data as well as the ongoing survey.  The EXPRES collaboration also includes researchers at Lowell Observatory and Yale University and access to Solar EPRV data from EXPRES.  The Bay Area offers opportunities to collaborate with exoplanet researchers at UC Berkeley, Stanford, UC Santa Cruz, and NASA Ames in addition to being a great place to live and enjoy the outdoors.

SFSU is a primarily undergraduate institution and offers a Masters in Astrophysics.  There will be opportunities to advise both undergraduates and Masters students.  In addition, SFSU is a Hispanic Serving Institution and we have started a monthly bilingual public outreach program, Noche de Estrellas.  The events include science talks, planetarium shows, and roof-top observing all in Spanish and English; the post-doc will be welcome to participate.

The start date is September 2024, but earlier start dates are welcome.  A PhD in Astronomy or related field is required before start.  Initial appointment is for 1 year, renewable up to 3 years.  Salary is $65,000 plus funds for travel and publications.

Applicants should submit a CV, full publication list, a statement of current and future research interests (4 pages including figures and references), and the names and contact information of 3 references.  Letters of references will be solicited for applicants who advance to the second round of consideration. Applications received before  January 15, 2024 will be given full consideration.  Applications should be sent as a single PDF to jmbrewer@sfsu.edu with a subject of "[POSTDOC] Your Name".
